Thesaurus Thunder Day!
by Susie E. Caron (c)12/16/14
What is your "GoTo" book? I love my Thesaurus! Long ago a junior high school teacher introduced me to this wonderful book. My first Thesaurus was a ragtag, tattered-eared, paperback copy that I used at college, and into my adult life. When I needed a word, not just any word, but the best word to clearly convey the meaning in my written work, I turned to my Thesaurus.
I write every day. When I meet with clients, I write my notes, letters, and other works, defined by my profession as a Psychologist Master. At other times, I write stories, ideas, and poems just for fun. This past two years I wrote and published three picture books Twee', I Am Twee', and Twee' for Two. I also write articles in my Blog - Between You & Me. This month I began writing a Kindle book for parents, (to be published in early 2015). In writing all of these, I turn to the Thesaurus greedily and often.
I recently reached an age where I required reading glasses, and I found it difficult to use my old paperback copy. So, I splurged and purchased a hard bound, large print edition for myself. (Would you like one? Click HERE.) Upon its arrival, I opened this gift to myself and felt like a kid at Christmas. I eagerly leafed through its copious contents, and smelled the aroma of what would come. I even found many of my favorites, all in print large enough to easily read. Here are just a few: shrewdness, lavish, solicit, ponder, and pedantic.
Do you own a Thesaurus? I will guess that most of you under the age of 55 would rather use an online version. I tried that and I didn't find it satisfying at all.
Today I found an online version of the Thesaurus. I clicked on this. 'Generator' was the word already in the search box. So I deleted it and typed in the word 'irretrievable'. This is what I found "irretrievable." By scrolling down I found a definition, 'irretrievable'used in a sentence, as well as a list of synonyms, related words, near antonyms, and antonyms. This didn't feel at all as satisfying as using a physical copy. It felt more like work - than fun, even though anything I might want to know about the single word 'irretrievable' was right there, or was it?
With my big, hunky, large print, Thesaurus, I can look up any word in less time than it takes to breathe twice. When I find a word, I select a word from the list, then, before I search for that synonym I plop a sticky note on the page and search some more. I love this 'treasure hunt' and I continue searching until I find the perfect word. This all usually takes less than 2 1/2 minutes, unless, of course, I get so excited about all the really cool and awesome words I'm finding that I forget to stop: cease, desist, let go of, disengage, abandon, or walk away…
